Develop Quiz: “It should have been us”
Every so often, there’s a loud thud somewhere near Holborn in London. That sound is the sound of games industry giants colliding in the quiz to end all quizzes: Develop’s industry get-together at the Sway Bar.
The banter flows as freely as the free drink, and before you know it, even staunch allies are turning on each other in an attempt to get the upper hand. The Creative Assembly entered two teams in this year’s competition, and Team 2 (Alien IP, Console Team) resorted to dirty tactics to put Team 1 (The Rusty Halberds, Total War) off their game in the opening stages, sending a double agent to ask, repeatedly, “did you get the one about Justin Bieber?”. Bieber never featured as a correct answer.
Despite this obvious subterfuge, Team One prevailed, finishing in top spot – only to be cruelly denied by a tiebreaker finish. Despite a startlingly accurate impression of Mario (something grim about a blocked pipe?), our very own Alex Wright-Manning couldn’t quite pip his All-Star opponents in the final, as they said a few more games out loud. A cruel end to a vintage performance.
“Unfortunately, our intensive revision on harpsichord music of the 16th and 17th centuries proved an exercise in futility, with a surprising omission of any related questions, but with astonishing knowledge of celebrity trouser snakes, evil geniuses and backwards music, The Rusty Halberds proved that we’re not just games nerds here at CA”, boomed a defiant Wright-Manning.
The mood was one of reflection in the studio this morning.
“That should have been us”, wept PR Manager Rebecca Attard, pointing at the picture of the All-Stars team that cruelly denied CA top spot, but Wright-Manning was more philosophical in the face of the tragedy.
“Standing firm against the finest beards that the games industry has to offer, our valiant team not only took the coveted 2nd prize, but also acquitted themselves nobly when it came to smack talking the opposition. Threats were made, aspersions cast about Jagex’s parentage and inspired insults created and jotted down in a word jumble format for later study and polish”, he said.
“All in all a cracking night, and although we didn’t emerge as the overall victors, we were certainly the people’s choice. We’ll be back in September to bring the cup home to where it belongs.”
Too right. You can see the full standings on the Develop site now.
